Dubai is Going to Build Vegas Style Island with Bellagio, MGM & Aria Hotels

The ambitious project known as The Island, developed by Wasl off the Jumeirah coast in Dubai, aims to create a significant impact by featuring three prestigious Las Vegas hotels: MGM Grand, Bellagio, and Aria.

While first unveiled in 2017, details regarding the development’s progress had been limited until recent reports provided confirmation. Wasl, the project’s developer, has recently granted a massive construction contract to China State Construction Engineering Corporation, amounting to an estimated USD 1.2 billion (Dhs 4.4 billion).

This deal stands as Dubai’s most substantial construction agreement since 2017, signaling the project’s advancement and significance within the city’s development landscape.

Set against the backdrop of the iconic Burj Al Arab, The Island is set to feature an expansive 3.5 million square meters, envisioned as an MGM-operated hotel and entertainment district. During the latest MGM earnings call in November 2023, MGM’s President and CEO, Bill Hornbuckle, provided further insights into The Island’s developments.

He confirmed that the luxury project is actively ‘under construction’ and detailed plans for the inclusion of 1,400 hotel rooms across the MGM Grand, Bellagio, and Aria brands.

The MGM portfolio encompasses three prestigious brands renowned for their excellence in the lively hospitality scene of Las Vegas. These brands, including MGM Grand, Bellagio, and Aria, hold an esteemed reputation synonymous with top-notch service and luxury experiences.

Their presence on The Island signifies a promise of unparalleled quality and sophistication, elevating the anticipated hospitality standards to match the renowned Las Vegas standards.

The incorporation of these esteemed brands ensures a luxurious and upscale experience for visitors, promising an ambiance of opulence and exceptional service akin to their renowned legacy in Las Vegas.

Gazing upon the renowned Las Vegas lake stands the Bellagio, drawing inspiration from Mediterranean aesthetics. It showcases a permanent Cirque du Soleil aqua show and hosts a choreographed fountain spectacle.

As for the Aria, positioned as a more opulent counterpart, it caters to culinary enthusiasts with an array of upscale dining options such as Catch, Jean-Georges Steakhouse, and Carbone. Arguably the most renowned among them is the MGM Grand, celebrated for its star-studded events, celebrity visits, and vibrant pool festivities.

Casino on The Island of Dubai?

As of now, there’s no official confirmation regarding the inclusion of licensed gaming facilities. However, it has been verified that the future Wynn Resort in Ras Al Khaimah, set to unveil in 2027 with 1,500 rooms, will indeed incorporate a casino.

In early 2023, the UAE announced intentions to establish The General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority (GCGRA) with the objective of formulating a regulatory framework for both national lottery operations and commercial gaming.

The primary aim is to establish a meticulously regulated gaming environment that ensures all participants adhere strictly to defined guidelines and uphold the highest standards. This initiative potentially opens doors for future licensed gaming entities within the UAE.

During the MGM earnings call, Hornbuckle expressed optimism about potential opportunities if gaming were to be sanctioned, starting with the UAE and potentially extending to Dubai.

He emphasized the brand’s belief in possessing the world’s premier gaming hospitality brands, coupled with the prime location in Dubai. Hornbuckle further indicated that their ongoing project could encompass an elite gaming segment of international standards, pending approval.
